The School

What

EFETA is the first dogmatic learning center that offers a high quality academic program in Feminist Theology: it is rigorous and demanding whilst well in sync with the complexity of today’s religious and cultural world.

Feminism has meant a change in paradigm that no longer knows geographic, racial, linguistic, social, political, religious or academic borders. This change has come hand in hand with the development of democratic processes and the appreciation of human rights, especially the rights of women. One of the areas most resistant to this change in paradigm is that of religion both in theory as well as in practice.

The social - cultural changes that have taken place in the occidental world, more specifically in Spain, and quite extensive in the whole Spanish speaking part of the world, call for a more or less critical revision, in some cases an urgent revision, of all beliefs that continue to be based in firmly rooted theological concepts that go against justice and the dignity of any one person.

This context has led to groups, associations and individual women to plead for an increased democratization of theological concepts and for more than just information. This is where the EFETA plays a pivotal role with Andalusia being its symbolical, geographical starting point.

Organizational Structure EFETA

In the current academic year, 2007-2008, the EFETA, in collaboration with RR. Irlandesas, Ed. Verbo Divino, has provided 14 scholarships.

Why

The EFETA was born as a result of the want by both women and men to study theology in a non sexist framework, in the geographical and linguistic Hispanic world, in relation to the cultural, plural and religious realities of daily life.

EFETA is conscious of the fact that ideas have always proven to be very powerful. Since thinking critically is subversive and to do so with strictness and creativity is an instrument of individual, social and political change, EFETA wants to provide women with the possibility of high quality learning that can help eliminate patriarchal injustices cemented in theological religious reasoning. EFETA wants to offer an alternative that can help us achieve the better world many people dream of.

The natural academic environment of the School, whose level corresponds to a Masters, is the civil University and the entities associated to it.

Why

The immediate objectives of EFETA are to:

Create a solid base for Feminist Theology that allows students to access superior levels in the differing areas of this Theology. Enable access to superior levels of learning in the different areas of Theology…and in the middle term make it possible for women, and other interested persons, to acquire the basic instruments that will allow them to speak authoritatively on the subject.

Promote the research and development of feminist theological thought that allows a dialogue and understanding of other cultural and religious traditions in our surroundings.

How

EFETA divides its content programme into two progressive cycles with Semi presential Methodology.

  • The classroom programme consists of 5 credits given in the annual seminar and depends on the professors responsible for each course and the material and exams dictated by each seminar.
  • The online programme will be completed by a series of on-line tutorials accessed through the School’s portal and will consist of 4 credits per course per quarter.

In addition, each student will be required to complete an essay or reflection each cycle. The rest will be completed by evaluation requirements (hours achieved through work)..

Complementary activities can be found in various areas

  • The EFETA Association
  • Academic Institutions (currently in progress)
  • Seminar at the School

EFETA is the Greek translation of aramaic term which means to open yourself, εφφαθα.

The book of Mark states Jesus used the word when he cured the mute and deaf (Mc 7,34) and this also corresponds to the beginnings of the project ESCUELA FEMINISTA DE TEOLOGIA DE ANDALUCIA.

EFETA is just this, a place to begin learning about theology and it is particularly oriented at women within a feminist critical perspective.

The EFETA project is founded on the same principles as the association of the same name with the School as its primary objective and whose spirit is fuelled by everything it generates and everything that comes from it.

Association and School form a place to permanently REFLECT, STUDY and DEBATE.
